Several attempts to nail this, this is as close as I got to how I'd pre-visualised the shot. Wanted the depth of a wide aperture but without the ambient or lightpainting highlights blowing out.
First step: Set up the lightstand to act as pivot point for the wand. Focus manually. Remove lightstand.
Second step: Start exposure. Quickly add gelled light to the foreground from three positions.
Third step: I'm using a Nikon lens to Sony body adapter so it provides the aperture ring that's otherwise missing from my AF-S 50mm. Stop up towards f/16.
Fourth step: reposition equipment to create disc pattern. End exposure.
