Photography is all about light so when I tell people I create images in the darkness of night one of the first questions I get asked is "How?"
Technically the answer’s pretty straightforward: long exposures allow the camera to gather light over an extended period of time so a picture that takes a split second to record in bright daylight may need several seconds or more to render in the dimness of night-time.
As the simplicity of the answer sinks in, often a second question forms – "Why?"
Well, with a young family, night-time was the only chance I had for photography so my journey into long exposures started one evening with a camera fixed inside my car, capturing the neon nightlife in ten-second slices. The resultant images seemed to invert reality, with the moving car appearing in the frame as the only static element whilst the streetlights and shopfronts whizzed past.
Creating different effects with simple adjustments I was able to access an enormous array of styles and finishes right there on the camera. The concept of fully exploring my camera's potential out on location appealed far more than did the thought of spending hours behind a desk poring over a screen using Photoshop and, thus, a battle of wits ensued: man vs digital machine.
In 2010 I introduced spirographic domes to the world's lightpainters. And I'm proud to have defeated the naysayers who declared startrails were an exclusively dark-sky affair by shooting a comprehensive set of startrail images against urban landmarks. Darkness is great, true, but it doesn't have to be the only way.
I have a beautiful, long-suffering wife who puts up with more than her fair share of nocturnal spousal absence and two wonderful children who regularly bear the brunt of my post-shoot tiredness over breakfast.
